With stunning views overlooking Lake Kivu, Rwamatamu is as picturesque as the coffee is tasty. High altitudes of over 2000masl and regular rainfall make this the ideal place for producing bright, washed coffees.
Notes of ripe juicy peach and nectarine are at the forefront of this lot, with floral honey and warming brown sugar in the background. Incredibly well processed, clean and complex.
Ripe coffee cherries are picked, and sorted to remove any defects. They then pass through a depulper, where the flesh of the cherry is removed, leaving behind a sticky mucilage layer. Next, the beans are fermented, and the mucilage layer breaks down, leaving a clean coffee bean behind. The beans are then carefully dried, resulting in a clean-tasting coffee with natural sweetness and complexity.
With bright juiciness reminiscent of ripe peaches, and the complexity of its floral notes, Rwamatamu has an intense natural sweetness that is delicious as a filter coffee.

When “responsibly sourced coffee” is part of your mission, the beauty is that it becomes more possible to achieve as time goes on.
We’ve been able to foster some amazing relationships over the last few years, and this is the closest one yet - one that started out in our very own Bedford St. Coffee when Bernice was working as a barista while studying at Teesside University.
Since starting to take over operations back home, we've had hours of fantastic conversation with Bernice and her husband, Luke. We're incredibly fortunate to be able to have such close links to Rwamatamu, and we're excited to continue the meaningful dialogue for years to come.
Rwandan coffee is valued for its fruity and floral characteristics, often featuring vibrant acidity and complex sweetness due to the country’s ideal growing conditions. Rwamatamu, like many Rwandan coffees, has a delicate balance of juicy fruit notes, such as peach and nectarine, complemented by a honeyed sweetness and smooth body, making it unique and memorable.
Rwamatamu is a light to medium roast with tasting notes of juicy peach and nectarine, floral honey, and warm brown sugar. It’s celebrated for its clean and complex profile, making each sip sweet, floral and super satisfying.
This coffee is sourced directly from the Rwamatamu Coffee farm in the Lake Kivu region of Rwanda. This area’s ideal elevation, rich volcanic soil and meticulous processing create high-quality beans known for their vibrant, clean flavours. Our relationship with Bernice and Luke from Rwamatamu Coffee is one of our most direct connections yet - one that began when Bernice was working in our coffee shop while studying at Teesside University!
Rwamatamu is versatile and can be brewed using various methods. Pour-over methods, like V60, are ideal for showcasing the coffee's complexity and bright fruit notes. However, it also works well in a cafetiere, bringing out its smooth, creamy body and subtle sweetness. You can check out our recommended brew guides below.
Washed processing removes the coffee cherry’s fruit layer before drying, resulting in a cleaner, more vibrant taste profile. Rwamatamu’s washed process highlights its natural peach, honey, and brown sugar notes with a high level of clarity and complexity.
Yes, Rwamatamu coffee can make a beautifully balanced espresso, offering a fruity sweetness and smooth, floral finish. Its unique flavour profile shines through particularly well in espresso, producing a bright and complex shot. While espresso is traditionally enjoyed with a dark and rich coffee, Rwamatamu’s fruity flavour notes create a distinct and lively twist, perfect for those looking to explore a different side of espresso.
Everyone's setup is unique, but here are some good starting points.
